If God Was a Dog: Would Your Relationship with God be Different?
Why do we, as humans, seem to spend our time, energy, resources, and emotions on our dogs so easily, and yet we spend much less time, energy, resources, and emotions with God? If God was a dog, would your relationship with God be different?
Come as we describe the characteristics of our own dog, Tucker (boxer), and compare those characteristics to the characteristics of God. Perhaps after our journey together, you will gain a greater appreciation of God and who He is. Perhaps you will view your dog a bit differently, too! As humans, we may think God is distant or angry with us. We may think He doesn’t really career about us, or perhaps only care about the big things, not the day-to-day events. Or perhaps you know God personally, but maybe you don’t quite understand the purpose of prayer or spending time in His Word. He desires to have a deep relationship with you, just like your dog desires to have a deep relationship with you.

Being an avid animal person, and seeing the cover of this book, I knew that I had to get my hands on it! I read many books that focus on God, the Christian walk, etc. and what I really enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, is how truly clever, user-friendly, well documented, and just all around accessible the messages, stories, examples, etc. are. It’s really hard to not consider the author a good friend as she takes many of God’s greatest gifts and treasures for us and applies them in a very real and applicable manner! Like we’re having coffee and talking about God! I’ve been opening up, randomly, daily to whatever chapter I land on and I read that chapter or reread that chapter and I find that it really applies for what’s going on in my life at that moment… Pretty cool!
This book is an entertaining, originative writing demonstrating the juxtaposition of relationships between our dogs and ourselves, vs. God and ourselves. Her clever comparison highlights areas of our relationship with God and challenges us to examine and strengthen those. Each chapter ends with action items to explore each topic more in depth on your own. This is a delightful, amusing book that pushes us to improve our relationship with God.
I loved the message of this book. We all love our dogs and give them our world, yet we need to ask, do we spend time with God in the same way. Well done, simple but powerful message.
Beth presents the Gospel several times throughout this book. She shares cute anecdotes that all dog lovers can relate to. From there, she challenges the Christian to dig deeper into his/her faith and relationship with God. The perspective is unique and genuinely makes you think. This is a perfect book to share with those seeking to know God and those who have been walking with the Lord for a long time.
